Americans have grown fearful. Most believe, not surprisingly, that the country is headed in the wrong direction. For the first time ever, most Americans believe their children may not fare as well as they have. We spend nearly as much as the rest of the world combined on our military, chasing phantoms across the world. Conservatives in both parties rail about debt and deficits. They line up to support adding another $33 billion in emergency spending for the misbegotten war in Afghanistan, while blocking the $23 billion needed to forestall the layoff of a staggering 275,000 teachers across the country.
Washington is crazed about debt and deficits, but the real deficit is in fortitude, not finances. Consider the contrast between this country emerging from the Great Depression and World War II and now.

But the president is now in retreat. His call to action has been muddled by pollsters and positioning. Conservatives peddle fear and conspiracies as they did after World War II, but this time America's leaders are cowed, letting the frightened block the bold measures needed to forge our future.

As long as the GOP platform of "Be afraid, be very afraid" Holds sway over so many and the race for re-election continues to begin immediately after the polls close, nothing can get done. Majority no longer rules in the Senate and the population is ok with that. The opposition lies, blatantly, and even when faced with fact too many accept the lie. Don't blame only our leaders, blame the 'real' Americans, show choose not to think for themselves, who are weak in the face of challenge, and continue to believe that it is more productive to fix blame than the problem.

How can we ever get out of this malaise without living-wage jobs? The author brings up the depression and WWII; how would we have done back then, with the equivalent of wallywerld and mcjobs as the standard?

those of us who have lived below the middle class line are fully aware of this......... we have already mastered out fears.

many of us saw it coming and tried to warn our 'neighbors'. Politicians were quick to render us nothing more then unworthy voices of want and entitlement.

now you will live with what you went along with when they come for you.

      sorry.

I don't recall hearing many warnings during the spend and spend years of Bush. Of course that has nothign to do with the current situation, that is all Obama's fault.

silly, silly, comment. There is evidence as to his participation, as well a confession by the man.... all those dead brain cells no doubt..... alcohol can do that. maybe you had faith in your government system and you were busy working, making a life.... but there were/are warning signs.

I made my discoveries 7 years ago. But have always been keen to the propaganda. for at least 15 years now.

heads up regardless. It is no longer fringe to say "learn how to take care of your needs" as the day of hyperinflation are coming. If you hear nothing else. Hear that.
